Gujjars find their way, govt concedes to demands

Gujjars
Jaipur, Jan 6: The Gujjars have been successful after they flexed their muscles demanding reservation for jobs and education. They were successful in getting 2 pct reservation in government jobs and colleges. The government has conceded to their demand and the 17 day agitation has ended amicably marking an end to the impasse.

The Rajasthan government has finally conceded to offer 1 pct reservation to the Gujjar community for special consideration in colleges and higher education sectors. The state government had earlier agreed to a demand of securing jobs for the kith and kin of the victims of the Gujjar agitation. A monthly sanction has been implemented for those who have been permanently disabled by the agitation.

According to a report by the government, the state government had given jobs to 58 people who were victims of the agitation in 2007 and 2008. But the Gujjars maintained that the actual number was 70 and demanded jobs for the rest of 12 people.

Bending their back further the government has also decided to give new arms licenses to the Gujjars and renew existing ones. The government will also give back the arms confiscated from them during the agitation within a period of two months.

The Gujjars original demand of 4 pct reservation would be taken up by the government after categorizing the Gujjars under the Special Backward Classes (SBC) gets a clearance.
