Mumbai, Nov 28: The Central government on Sunday, Nov 28 has given a green signal for the construction of nuclear power plant in Maharashtra.
The Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh issued the clearance for the Jaitapur nuclear power plant. It was India's first nuclear plant to be set up in collaboration with a French firm.
During the press conference, Jairam Ramesh said that he was very happy to give the nod for the Jaitapur nuclear plant. He also added that nuclear power is the cleanest option for power.
The new nuclear power plant will be set up by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) with help of French company Areva. It was India's first plant under civil nuclear agreement with France.
Earlier, the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Environment Ministry has recommended a conditional environmental clearance to the 10,000 MW nuclear power plant.
NPCIL is expecting that the first unit of the project will be commissioned in 2017-18.
