Chavan to return Mumbai flat fearing another row?

Prithviraj Chavan
Mumbai, Nov 13: While Ashok Chavan was asked to quit over the taint of being involved in the Adarsh housing scam, his successor and the new Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is considering surrendering the flat in Wadala which he was alloted through the MP quota, fearing an outbreak of another controversy following some scandalous media reports.

Reports have emerged that Prithviraj Chavan got a flat from the chief minister's quota, which was meant for the poor. Reports published in a section of the media alleged that Chavan was alloted a flat reserved for the weaker section through the chief minister's 5 per cent housing quota.

Sources close to the CM have revealed that the flat in Wadala was alloted in the name of Chavan's mother Premlabai Chavan in 2003 since she had to be in the city for her cancer treatment.

"But before the allotment process was completed, she passed away. Since, Chavan has always lived in Delhi, he never felt the need to have a house in Mumbai. However, the Wadala flat was then given in the name of Chavan himself in his capacity as a member of parliament," sources said.

The chief minister is reportedly planning on taking a decision regarding the flat soon.

These reports take special significance in the backdrop of Ashok Chavan's alleged role in the irregularities in the allotment of apartments in a south Mumbai housing soceity. It was this taint that subsequently cost him the Chief Minister's post.

Indian, While I agree, this money in the Swiss banks should be returned and the culprits punished, it will not do much good to India if it is in Indian currency. It would be like government printing money and causing inflation. If it is in foreign currency, it might do some good as it can be used to import oil, minerals and other physical resources.
