Manipur: Sharmila completes 10yrs of fasting

Irom Sharmila Chanu
Imphal, Oct 2: Civil rights activist Irom Sharmila Chanu on Tuesday, Nov 2 completed 10 years of her fast-unto-death demanding withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, from Manipur.

A spokesperson of Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Committee) said several social organisations organised sit-in protests in different parts of the State to show solidarity with Sharmila, who began her fast after 10 civilians were killed in an alleged encounter by Assam Rifles personnel near Imphal airport in 2004.

Sources say a room of JN hospital in Imphal, where she is being fed through her nose has been converted into a jail for Sharmila.

What a waste. Knowing it to be futile but still going ahead to do something like this is foolhardy. The govt is not going to change anything in a hurry
