Heavy rains batter Andhra, 16 killed

Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad, Nov 2: A trough of low pressure in Bay of Bengal and vigorous northeast monsoon brought down heavy rains on Andhra Pradesh, where at least 16 people were killed in rain-related incidents.

Speaking on the extent of damage caused by the rains over the past two days, officials said on Tuesday, Nov 2, that dozens of villages and residential areas in several towns were submerged under water while crops in over 100,000 acres were damaged..

North and south coastal districts were the worst hit by the downpour caused by the influence of a trough of low pressure in Bay of Bengal.

As threat of cyclonic storm looms large over the state, the state government has requested the army, navy and air force to be ready for deployment of forces in case of necessity.

According to the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, a cyclonic storm is likely to be formed by Tuesday, Nov 2 evening as the depression in the Gulf of Thailand will reach south Andaman Sea in a  couple of hours.

Forecasts suggest that coastal Andhra will see more rains, while north coastal districts may receive very heavy rains till Thursday, Nov 4.

Other regions under the heavy rain threat are Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the state of Tamil Nadu.
