Meghalaya civic polls postponed due to violence

Shillong, Oct 29 : The Meghalaya government on Friday, Oct 29, postponed its municipal elections in the three districts of Garo Hills region, scheduled to be held on Oct 29, due to anti-poll protests.

"The law and order situation is not conducive for elections, so the first-ever civic polls in 3 districts of Garo Hills was adjourned," chief electoral officer Prashant Naik said.

"New dates for holding the polls would be decided later by the government," he added.

In East Garo Hills, many candidate's vehicle were set on fire by miscreants and a petrol bomb was also hurled at the residence of deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi, but it did not explode, police said.

"Many polling personnel were also threatened," police added.

New Delhi, May 22: Australia announced an additional aid of 330,000 USD for the HIV/AIDS and drugs prevention programmes in Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram.
