AFSPA has outlived its importance: Omar

Omar Abdullah
Jammu, Sep 21: Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has been pressurising the government to revoke the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), has now dubbed it a draconian law.

Arguing that the law had outlived its importance, Omar Abdullah on Tuesday, Sep 21 told a TV news channel, CNN-IBN, that AFSPA does not demonise the army.

Refuting separatists' allegation that the all-party delegation's visit to Jammu Kashmir was not an honest step towards resolving the Kashmir crisis, the Chief Minister reiterated that the all-party delegation has now got a balanced view of the situation in the state.

These remarks from the Chief Minister come after the Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said that the army was being demonised and made a 'scapegoat'.

"The Indian Army is not responsible for the current turmoil in the Kashmir Valley. The army's presence has in fact been helping the law and order situation in the Valley," he stressed while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a CII event here.
