China presses Japan for release of boat captain

China
Beijing, Sep 13: After the release of 14 crew members of the Chinese fishing boat that collided with two Japanese coast guard vessels, Beijing is now pressurising Tokyo to release the boat captain as well.

"The Japanese side continues to illegally detain the captain of the Chinese fishing boat. China once again strongly urges the Japanese side to immediately release him as well," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The collision took place last week leading to an intense diplomatic standoff between the two nations.

"All the people of China... should condemn the illegal Japanese behaviour in one voice and fully embody the staunch will and determination of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said.

The Chinese's trawler's captain has been arrested by Japan on suspicion of obstructing officers on duty. The 41-year-old captain, Zhan Qixiong could face a penalty of up to three years in prison.

The 14 crew members earlier released by Tokyo have reached China.

In todays world China is an anachronism. For a country of this size and history their vision is too small. I am afraid they will end up hurting themselves.

The bigger issue is that China lacks transparency in its huge military buildup. At a time when the world should be ratcheting down its nuclear arsenals, China is going full steam ahead, and this will cause another nuclear arms race. The last country that did such a thing was the Soviet Union, and everyone knows what happened to them. China is on a collision course with the free world, and while China has economic connections with nearly every country in the world, its military allies are few,...
