Mumbai, Sep 3: The benchmark Nifty ended on a negative note below a range of 5475-5600.
Markets were dragged by metal, capital goods, ITC, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Tata Motors, Tata Power and Maruti.
However, markets got support from ONGC, Bharti, Infosys, SBI, Hero Honda and HUL
The BSE Sensex closed at 18,221.43, down 16.88 points and the NSE Nifty fell 6.75 points to settle at 5,479.40.

Market slips to red; Hero Honda up
At 2:23 hrs the Sensex was trading at 18240.57, up 2.26 points and the Nifty was at 5485.55, down 0.60 points.
Buying was seen in realty, auto, telecom and pharma stocks and where as Metal, oil&gas and banking stocks witnessed some selling pressure.
Top gainers were Unitech up 2.80 percent, Hero Honda up 2.64 percent, Bharti Airtel up 1.98 percent, Mah and Mah up 1.84 percent.
Top losers were Suzlon Energy down 1.75 percent, Jindal Steel down 1.57 percent, Jaiprakash Asso down 1.44 percent, Sterlite Ind down 1.28 percent.

Markets go on green note; Unitech, Hero Honda up
At 12:32 hrs the Sensex was trading at 18249.67, up 11.36 points and the Nifty was at 5487.40, up 1.25 points.
The top gainers on the BSE midcap were Nirma rallied 13.66 percent; Manappuram, MVL, Bajaj Finserv and Trent gained 5-7 percent.
Top losers on the BSE Midcap were Peninsula Land, State Bank of Mysore, Indian Metals, Jet Airways and Mahindra Holiday lost 2-2.6 percent.
Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap were Goodyear, Ador Welding, Shristi Infra, Kiri Dyes Chemical and Brandhouse were up 8.5-11.5 percent.
Top losers on the BSE Smallcap were Ganesh Housing, AGC Networks, Vikas WSP, Swan Mills and REI Six Ten fell 2.7-4.7 percent.

Market opens in green; Infy, Bharti, Sterlite up
The Nifty started the day on a flat note with a positive bias following US cues.
Unitech, Hero Honda, Infosys, Sterlite Industries, TCS, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, SAIL, ONGC, Tata Steel, M&M and Cipla were witnessing buying interest.
At 9:30 hrs, the Sensex was trading at 18261.85, up 23.54 points and the Nifty was at 5497.50, up 11.35 points.
However, Suzlon Energy, HDFC Bank, ITC, DLF, HCL Tech and GAIL were losers in early trade.
