Police conducted sham probe into 1984 riots: CBI

1984 Anti-Sikh Riots
New Delhi, Aug 27: Not only are the walls closing in on the former Congress MP, Sajjan Kumar, but the Delhi police team that led the probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots may be facing serious action as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has dug up some dirt about the special anti-riots cell.

The probe agency, which has taken over the anti-Sikh riots case, told the Supreme Court on Friday, Aug 27 that the police cell conducted "sham investigations and farce prosecutions" to shield ex-MP Sajjan Kumar.

Questioning the intention of the anti-riot cell of Delhi police in filing status reports on Jul 31, 2008 in the trial court while the probe was being conducted by CBI, the agency said, "There was no occasion for the Delhi Police to deal with the case once the entire material was supplied to the CBI by the government of India from the custody of Delhi Police (on Oct 10, 2005)."

In its affidavit, the CBI also accused Sajjan Kumar of attempting to delay the trail in one way or the other and urged the apex court to vacate the Aug 13 stay granted by it.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan, posted the final hearing on CBI's plea to Sep 7.

The agency hopes to prosecute Kumar for the riots under Delhi Cantonment police station in which 60 people were killed.
