Govt vs RIM: BlackBerry sales decline in India

Blackberry mobiles
New Delhi, Aug 27: The controversy between Indian government and the BlackBerry maker, Research in Motion (RIM), led to the drop of BlackBerry phone's sales in the country.

Mobile dealers told that the sales of BlackBerry phones, which helps to send encrypted e-mails, have declined in recent days as customers find it dicey to invest in Blackberry phones. The market report shows that the sales dipped following the uncertainty over whether the government would allow access to the smartphone's encrypted email and messaging services beyond the Aug 31 deadline.

Many dealers told that the sales dropped by almost 50 percent after the government's deadline to fix the issues over the security concerns. RIM offered to provide information on a deferred basis or through a non-human interface using the cloud computing environment.

Indian government rejected all these proposals and asked RIM to install a server in India for real time information rather than a deferred one in the interest of national security. Many BlackBerry dealers in the country told that if RIM allows government to access the encrypted data, it will effect the sales as the encryption was the unique selling proposition for the phones.
