US freezes assets of Bin Laden's son-in-law

Washington, Aug 25: United States has frozen the assets of Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, as a move to target al-Qaeda's sources of funds.

The assets of Osama's son-in-law, Al-Khayr, would be frozen in US jurisdictions under new sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department on Tuesday, Aug 24. US considered Al-Khayr as a possible replacement for the al-Qaeda"s chief financial officer.

Al-Khayr was in the 2009 list of 85 people wanted by Saudi government. US told that he had raised millions of dollars for a specific terrorist attack against US interests. Earlier United Nations also took a similar step against him, which extends the sanctions to all member nations.

Earlier in 2010, US drone killed Mustafa al-Yazid, the former al-Qaeda leader and financier, in Pakistan.

"After the death in May of Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who essentially served as al-Qaeda "s chief financial officer, we will continue to work with our allies to target those like Al-Khayr who could step into al-Yazid"s shoes," said Stuart Levey, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.
