Badal seeks PM intervention on threat to JK Sikhs

Jammu Kashmir
Ludhiana, Aug 23: Further pressure is set to mount on the Central government over the situation in Jammu Kashmir as Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has now sought the Prime Minister's intervention on the issue of threats to the minority Sikh community in the state.

The threat to Sikhs was a serious issue and the Prime Minister should intervene in the matter immediately, Badal said, adding that his party would also raise the issue in Parliament.

The Chief Minister informed that a Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee delegation would call on the PM on Tuesday, Aug 24 to discuss the matter.

The delegation, led by its president Avtar Singh Makkar, will also include Shiromani Akali Dal parliamentary party leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.

Badal, who has written a letter on the issue to Manmohan Singh, has already spoken to Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah twice seeking safety of Sikhs in the state.

The 60,000-strong Sikh community, the single largest minority group in the valley, recently received anonymous letters asking Sikhs to embrace Islam or leave the Valley.

Omar Abdullah earlier met a delegation led Sardar K N Singh, President GPS Srinagar, to assure them of action against the "mischievous persons" involved in the threat and that he would do what it takes to secure the secular credentials of the people of the Valley.
