Govt convinces MPs on pay hike, impasse ends

Pranab Mukherjee
New Delhi, Aug 21: The UPA government seems to be on a winning streak. After ending the long standing impasse over the nuclear bill with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), it has now managed to douse the raging row on MPs' pay hike as well.

According to reports, the government has now managed to assure the Parliamentarians that it would review the increase in thier salaries approved by the Union Cabinet.

On Friday, Aug 20, the Cabinet gave its nod to a three-fold salary hike for the MPs. However, the MPs were unsatisfied as they sought a five-fold rise in their salaries. The cries for further pay hike stalled the proceedings of the Parliament.

But not for long as a private TV news channel reported that the stalemate over the issue ended on Saturday, Aug 21.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to end the deadlock, reported NDTV.

Zee News also confirmed this meeting and reported that BJP leader Gopinath Munde was also part of the meeting.

During the meeting, Pranab assured Lalu, Mulayam and others that the government would look into their concerns. If need be, Pranab said he would also speak to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also on the issue, the report informed.

Following the meeting, the NDA convener and JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav informed the Lok Sabha about the government's assurance .
