Army doctor honoured with Ashok Chakra

New Delhi, Aug 15: For the act of selflessness, courage and valour, Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, an Army medical officer, has been awarded the Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award, for saving the life of his 10 colleagues during a terrorist attack in Afghanistan.

Maj Laishram Jyotin Singh gave up his life for the sake of his colleagues. His sacrifice, also saved the lives of two officers, and four paramedics and two Afghan civilians still alive within the compound.

"President has awarded Ashoka Chakra to (Late) Major Laishram Jyotin Singh (posthumous) and two Kirti Chakras (Posthumous) to Captain Davinder Singh Jass and Vinod Kumar Choubey, Superintendent of Police, Chhattisgarh on the eve of Independence Day," an official release stated.

Maj Jyotin Singh is among the 114 personnel from the armed forces, central paramilitary forces and state police services who have been honoured with the President's Independence Day gallantry awards.Major Laishram Jyotin Singh is the first doctor to be honoured with the Ashok Chakra award.
