Government assures steps to promote Urdu

New Delhi, Aug 5: Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee said in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Aug 5, that the central government will take steps to promote the Urdu language.

"There are no two opinions about the importance of the Urdu language. It is part of the heritage of India," Mukherjee said.

He said the central government will ask all the state governments to initiate steps to strengthen Urdu language.

"The prime minister has already instructed the information and broadcasting ministry to provide necessary encouragements and funds for promotion of the Urdu media," Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee's assurance came after the leaders of all political parties, central ministers and even Speaker Meira Kumar expressed the need to strengthen the Urdu language.

However, Pranab Mukherjee praised all parties for speaking in one voice on the issue.

To reply to sri4u's comment on "Forcing a Culture", Culture can never be "imposed" as it takes centuries for a culture to develop in a society."Realty shows" & "Sach-ka-samna" are invading our culture. Give it a thought!

Continuing with my previous comments: Lets not "disown" & "despise" our achievements due to hate mongering. Munshi PremChand started to write it Urdu.Its narrowness of few minds who associate "Language" to "Religion", something that happened post Independence. Muslims in West Bengal & South India do not consider Urdu as their mother tongue.
