London, July 30 (ANI): The false teeth made specially to preserve Sir Winston Churchill's lisp have been sold for 15,200 pounds at an auction in Norfolk.
The dentures, which were sold by the son of dental technician Derek Cudlipp, who had made them for Churchill, were expected to fetch a maximum of 5,000 pounds at the Keys in Aylsham sale on 29 July.
Keys' valuer Andrew Bullock said the wartime premier suffered from terrible teeth and gums and needed complicated dentistry from childhood.
And they played a very important role during the war, as they helped Churchill disguise his lisp as he spoke to the nation over the wireless.
He always carried two of the dentures with him, and he valued the skill of his dentist, Wilfred Fish, who worked with Cudlipp, so much, that he nominated him for a knighthood.
And Cudlipp's son, Nigel, said his father's work was so important to Churchill that he would not let him join up to fight.
"When my father's call up papers came, Churchill personally tore them up," the BBC quoted Nigel as saying.
"Churchill said that he would be more important to the war effort if he stayed in London to repair his dentures," he stated.
A private collector from Gloucestershire, who is believed to own a number of items of Churchill memorabilia, including the microphone he used when announcing the end of the war, bought the false teeth. (ANI)
