Food Inflation falls to single digit, at 9.67 pc

New Delhi, Jul 28: As the protests against price rise and inflation rages on, for the first time in 2010, the food inflation came down to single digit at 9.67 per cent for the week ended July 17.

Inflation fell by 2.80 percentage points from 12.47 per to attain the single digit number after months of high inflationary rates.

The decline in the food inflation has been attributed to the fall in the prices of vegetables, especially potatoes and onions.

According to the official data released on Thursday, Jul 28, the prices of vegetable fell 14.77 per cent on a yearly basis. Potatoes became cheaper by over 46 per cent and onions cost 10 per cent lower compared to the corresponding period in 2009.

On weekly basis, prices of onions fell by 0.66 per cent. However the prices of potatoes went up by 2.06 per cent. However, overall vegetable prices were down 0.34 per cent.
