New Delhi, Jul 27: With just 68 days to go for the Commonwealth Games 2010 to begin, India is finally ready with its main venue, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The remodelling of the stadium is finally done after several delays and postponements and it is now ready to be inaugurated by Sports Minister M S Gill.
The Rs 961 crore remodeling project of stadium, which was constructed during the 1982 Asian Games, was scheduled to be completed months ago.
However, the project was delayed over construction of a 150m tunnel, which connected the two ends of the stadium.
The tunnel enables atheletes and performers to enter into the ground during the opening and closing ceremonies.
Nehru stadium spans over an area of 4,04,686 sqm. The oval shaped building will play host to a slew of sports events including weightlifting and lawn tennis.
The building is an erection of high strength steel work built as per international standards and is earthquake resistant.
It has a two tier seating capacity for 60,000 spectators. The stadium comprises of three independent structures of the main stadium building, are the lower tier, main building and supporting structure for PTFE membrane roof while the Field of Play is divided into Competition, Training and Warm up area.
