6.9-magnitude undersea quake hits Philippines

Philippines
New York, Jul 24: A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Saturday, Jul 24.

However, since the earthquake was underwater and it was too deep in the sea, the temblor did not cause any damage.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit the Moro Gulf off Mindanao Island at 7:15 am (local time), and that it had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology later reported that the earthquake measured 6.9 in magnitude on the Richter Scale.

"The origin of the quake was 606 km underground so it was barely felt," the institute"s Director Renato Solidum Jr said in an interview.

Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warning has been issued.
