Sainthia train accident: Statutory inquiry starts

Sainthia, Jul 21: The statutory inquiry into the Sainthia rail accident started when the guard of the Uttarbanga Express Somnath Sengupta, driver of Vananchal Express MD Nayeem and his assistant driver appeared before the team on Wednesday, Jul 21.

Railway sources said that many among the railway employees appeared at the hearing held by RP Yadav, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Eastern Circle).

The statutory inquiry is under the Civil Aviation Ministry. Inquiry would be held on Thursday, Jul 22 at the office of the Divisional Railway Manager in Howrah.

The accident when the Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express crashed into the rear of the Ranchi-bound Vananchal Express on Monday, Jul 19 had claimed the lives of 66 persons.

Rs 5L, job for kin of those killed in train mishap

Kolkata, Jul 19: Railway Ministry has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and employment to one member of each family of those killed in the West Bengal train accident involving Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express and Vananchal Express.Those seriously injured in the mishap would receive Rs 1 lakh and those with minor injuries will get Rs 25,000, Mamata Banerjee informed before leaving to the accident site.Expressing "some doubt" over the cause of the accident, the Union Railway Minister ordered.....
