Argentina legalises same-sex marriage

Buenos Aires, Jul 16: Argentina on Thursday, Jul 15 legalized same-sex marriage and became the first country in Latin America to allow gay marriage. The new move came following the landmark Senate vote carried live on national television.

The suggestion received 33-27 vote after 15 hour of debate in the counsel addressed by the Centre-left government of President Christina Kirchner. Some had reservations in the majority Roman Catholic country, but the law passed. The law fine-tunes the legal code which any couple will be addressed as 'the marrying parties' instead of 'husband and wife'.

Gerardo Morales, Opposition Radical senator opined that the Argentine society had changed, reiterating that the bill aims at guarenteeing the rights of minorities. Hundreds of people outside Congress chanted 'equality, equality' and cheered when the bill passed.

The ruling party leader Miguel Pichetto termed it as a 'historic day'.

New Delhi, Feb 25:  With the March seven deadline for the extradition of Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi looming large, the CBI is sending a three-member team to Argentina to initiate the legal process against the fugitive Italion businessman by February 28.CBI sources said the team would leave for Argentina shortly as the 30-day deadline for initiating the necessary process for the extradition of Quattrocchi, who was detained in Argentina on February six, would expire on March seven.The sources said the delay.....
