Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 16: Kerala Government decided to construct an air-strip to Bekal Fort in Kasargod, in a bid to enable the landing of small flights at Kariyamkund. The new decision came as a step to elevate Bakel Fort as an international tourist spot.
The cabinet is expected to approve the project soon and after the report from district collector, the land acquisition process would start, informed Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Kerala Home and Tourism Minister.
Kodiyeri added that the plan aims to develop an air-strip which could facilitate landing of flights with a capacity of 50 passengers. Tourists have to board a helicopter from Mangalore, which is about 50 km from Kasargod to visit Bekal Fort, presently. Rajiv Gandhi Civil Aviation Academy would aid the project.
Bekal Resort Tourism Corporation also plans to form a consortium to join hands with private tourists groups of Bekal, informed Kodiyeri.
Bekal Fort, built by the rulers of the ancient Kadampa dynasty is shaped like a giant keyhole.
