New Delhi, Jun 5: In a significant step bolstering India's ongoing fight against terrorism, the Home Ministry on Friday, Jun 4 declared the Indian Mujahideen (IM) a terror organisation.
"An order has been issued adding Indian Mujahideen and all its formations and front organisations to the list of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967," the ministry said in a statement.
The Indian Mujahideen is believed to be behind the serial bombings in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore and Mumbai. Through dozens of attacks, the outfit has killed as many as 500 people, the ministry added.
IM is linked with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and has been on the Home Ministry's radar for a long time. Besides this, there are suspicions that the terror group was working under directions of the ISI.
Now, with the entry of IM into the list of terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the security authorities will be able to apply the more stringent UAPA to people linked to the IM.
