US, Oz, UK advisories put Delhi on high alert

Delhi on high terror alert
New Delhi, May 1: Security advisories issued by United States, Australia and United Kingdom warning its citizens in India of terror attacks in the country's capital have prompted the Delhi police to step up security.

The home ministry has reportedly directed the police to intensify security arrangements at markets and malls in the wake of the foreign missions' warnings that the terrorists are planning to strike market places and the places frequented by westerners.

Home Ministry claimed that the government was aware of the threats and was taking required steps to thwart any incidents of violence.

Earlier, the Embassy of the United States in New Delhi updated its Apr 21 Warden Message to warn Americans in India of the 'imminent' terror attacks in Delhi.

"Markets, such as those located in Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Karol Bagh, Mehrauli, and Sarojini Nagar, can be especially attractive targets for terrorist groups," the security update issued on May 1 said.

This advisory prompted the Australia and UK to follow with their very own advisories.

"Reliable reporting indicates that terrorists may be planning to attack markets in New Delhi, including those frequented by foreigners. Such attacks could occur at any time from 22 April," the Australian advisory said.

This is the second time Australia quickly followed up one of its own advisory as soon as United States issued one. In the past, the Apr 21 Warden Message from US inspired Australia to advise its citizens to stay away from Delhi markets.

UK too issued an advisory, which said, "At this time there are increased indications that terrorists are planning attacks in New Delhi."

"You should be particularly conscious of security considerations in the vicinity of key government installations and tourist sites," the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office is quoted as saying.
