Fonseka calls his detention illegal, seeks freedom
Colombo, Apr 22: In his first speech as the newly elected lawmaker in the Parliament, Sri Lanka"s former Army chief General Sarath Fonseka sought freedom from what he called illegal detention.

Fonseka was detained in Feb 2010 for contesting the Presidential election against President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Jan 26, while still in uniform. He is currently waiting for his trial.

The former Army chief denied all charges and called himself a victim of illegal detention.

He won the Parlimanetary elections held in Apr 2010.

Fonseka, who was escorted to the Parliament by the guards on Thursday, Apr 22, demanded his freedom from the 'illegal detention.
