Deve Gowda backs Maoists, disrespect slain jawan
Hassan, Apr 20: In a startling incident, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda came out in the support of the Maoists while he was on a visit to express condolences to the family of a CRPF jawan killed in the Dantewada Maoist massacre.

The JD(S) supremo was in Hassan on Monday, Apr 19 to meet and convey his condolences to the family of a CRPF jawan Shivappa, who was one among the 76 security personnel butchered in a Maoist ambush in Chhattisgarh on Apr 6.

Speaking to media personnel, Deve Gowda batted for the Naxalites, who he believes "fight for the rights of the common man".

The former PM also criticised the government's way of handling the Maoist issue and pressed for an all-party meet on the issue.

"The government should make efforts to understand the problems of the Naxalites and what they are fighting for. Instead of this, the government is trying to solve the issue with bullets, which won't work," Gowda said.

Several leaders even in the government have spoken defending the cause of the Maoists and Naxalites. However, the former Prime Minister's statement comes as a shock due to two reasons. For one, the fact that the statement comes from someone of the stature of Deve Gowda, who once held the post of Prime Minister. And secondly, the situational context in which Mr Gowda made the statement hailing the Moaists' cause while on a visit to the home town of a slain jawan makes the remarks disrespectful and inappropriate.

The response of Deve gowda was reasonable and moderate and I do not know why some commentators do shout against. When the politicians, the court, the parliament, urban intellectuals even rest of the citizens of india are turning their backs at teh sad plight of adivasis at teh cruel hands of Police and Salwa Judum, no wonder that they depend on Naxals. Chidambaram is on a hard run to capture the tribal Lands for TATA and hence want to drive out the tribals with CRPF, AIR FORCE and so on. This...

Political sagacity requires a long term and just solution for conflicting claims for exploiting the mineral riches of the nation while enriching the lives of the people living in the area. Unfortunately the rich and the powerful in India want to trample on the tribals in their intemperate rush to grab and run. The exhortation of the PM fall on deaf ears and the Indian people will have to bear the burden due to sheer breakdown of the rule of law.
