TCS supports govt on adult education scheme
New Delhi, Apr 12: IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is lending support to the government in achieving its ambitious adult education campaign.

The software services and consulting company has agreed to help the government in providing the technological tools required to make the programme more effective and take it beyond being just a black board and chalk scheme.

"We have already had discussions with TCS on this and they are almost ready with a software that will teach adults (above 15 years of age) through animation, graphics and by downloading teaching materials from a dedicated site," a senior human resource development ministry (HRD) official is quoted as saying in a news agency report.

"We will go online to achieve our target wherever there is possibility. This will reduce the demand for books and other hard teaching material, definitely a constraint in many parts of the country," the official, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the news agency.

Mir Azamat Ali, a project manager with TCS confirmed to the news agency that TCS was indeed partnering with the ministry on the programme and added that the company was delighted to have the opportunity to work with the government.

The ministry is expected to make an announcement on the online teaching and learning facilities as part of the adult programme scheme soon.

The adult education programme called Saakshar Bharat was unveiled in 2009. The scheme, which focuses on female literary, will be implemented in 365 districts across India, where the literacy level is below 50 per cent.

Even though the partnership between the government and IT company is a commendable and an encouraging step, the success or even the purpose of the tie-up is dependant on other factors. The availability of internet or a computer to the people in the areas, where the programme will be implemented, is a serious question.
