2002 Guj riots: Modi fails to appear before SIT

2002 Guj riots: Modi fails to appear before SIT
Ahmedabad, Mar 22: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi failed to turn up before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for questioning in connection with a 2002 riots case on Sunday, Mar 21, raising doubts in the minds of the Indians on his long contested innocence.

Quoting sources in the investigative team, reports said that the Supreme Court appointed-SIT is also still waiting for communication from the state government regarding the summons issued on Mar 11. The BJP leader has also sought legal alternatives in response to the summons.

SIT summoned Modi for the first time for questioning in connection with the post-Godhra riots. The summon came in response to the case filed by wife of murdered former Congress MP Eshan Jaffrey, Zakia Jaffery.

Jafferey was one among the 69 killed in the 2002 Gulburg society riot in Ahmedabad. Modi's failure to appear before the SIT has also invited criticism from Congress.

"The SIT's direction to Narendra Modi to appear before it shows the seriousness and importance attached to the issue by the apex court," said party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi.
