Hyderabad, Mar 18: Water scarcity rocked the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Thursday, Mar 18 as the house had to be adjourned following oppositions' demand on an immediate discussion on the acute drinking water problem in the state.
The House was adjourned first for 15 minutes and then for another 30 minutes as agitated Telugu Desam Party members rushed to the Speaker"s podium, demanding a discussion on the issue through an adjournment motion.
Acknowledging the gravity of the issue, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said that effective steps were being taken to overcome the crisis.
"We are reviewing the situation at the highest level every week and taking required action to mitigate the water woes," he said.
However, the TDP and Left members refused to be pacified by Rosaiah's assurance and demanded immediate discussion, which led to the first adjournment. The proceedings were adjourned for the second time when the oppositions refused to calm down.
The day's proceeding started with the TDP members coming to the House with empty vessels to symbolise the drinking water crisis.
Earlier, a protest was staged at Gun Park outside the Assembly premises by TDP, CPI and CPM MLAs on a similar issue, during which the MLAs also indulged in a mock street brawl near a drinking water tanker with empty pots in hand.
