NHRC slams Maharashtra govt over MNS violence

NHRC slams Maharashtra govt over MNS violence
Mumbai, Mar 18: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has cracked the whip against Maharashtra government over its incompetence in protecting the people against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's (MNS) goonda raj.

The commission has also reportedly recommended Rs 10 lakh as a compensation to the victims
of MNS violence.

Assuring that the state home ministry was doing everything to provide people with security from the party and to curb their violence, RR Patil informed that 73 cases have been lodged against MNS workers.

He also threatened dire consequences if MNS chief Raj Thackeray takes law into his own hands again.

In response to NHRC's statements and recommendations, the minister said the state never ignored the law and order situation and that it was never silent when it comes to lawbreakers.

This is not the first time that the NHRC had to step in to speak for the aam admi as MNS went around burning down the state for 'Marathi manoos'. In Oct 2008, the human rights commission took suo-motu cognizance of the attack on north Indians and issued a notice to Maharashtra Chief Secretary and the state"s Director General of Police over the matter.
