Truckers threaten indefinite strike from Apr 5

Truckers to go on indefinite strike
New Delhi, Mar 5: Protesting the fuel price hike, All India Motor Transport Congress has decided to go on an indefinite nation-wide strike starting from Apr 5.

The representative body of truckers announced its decision on Friday, Mar 5, demanding for a rollback of the fuel price hike, which was announced in the Union Budget 2010-11.

AIMTC president G R Shanmugappa informed that the AIMTC will be shut and trucks will go off the road from Apr 5.

The truckers especially want to see the prices of diesel go down. Due to the duty hike on fuels announced by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee during the Budget on Friday, Feb 26, the price of diesel went up Rs 2.55 a litre.

Apart from fuel prices, the truckers are also demanding reduction in toll rates and an end to the anti-dumping duty imposed on imported truck tyres.

The government has been facing the heat from the Opposition, its allies and the state governments over the hike in fuel prices amid the soaring food prices.

A strike like this is also bound to have a cascading effect on various aspects and areas of functioning.
