Washington, Mar 5: With the memory of the Fort Hood rampage still fresh in the minds of Americans, a shooter opened fire at the Pentagon once again rattling the nation's sense of security.
A lone gunman opened fire at the subway entrance to the Pentagon complex on Thursday, Mar 4 injuring two police officers. Fortunately, the officers did not sustain life threatening injuries and are being treated at a hospital.
The gunman, on the other hand, was shot at and critically wounded.
The incident took place when the suspect tried to enter the tightly secured Defense Department headquarters at around 6:40 pm.
"He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting," Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police said.
"He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face," he added.
The officers at the Pentagon returned fire with semiautomatic weapons and critically injured the gunman.
The suspect has been identified as John Patrick Bedell, a 36-year-old American citizen.
Investigations into the incident is underway.
