Now, type regional languages on mobiles
Bangalore, Feb 19: To help millions of mobile users who do not know English, an Indian company has conceptualised and brought out a multilingual keypad known as Panini Keypad.

India, which boasts of 50 crore mobile users, also is a land of many languages. The Panini keypad is aimed at those millions of users who do not know English.

The new technology, which is available for free download, supports typing in many regional languages of India including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya and Assamese.

The new system does not require printed characters of any language on the phone as the characters are displayed on the screen and the user can type using the numeric keypad.

The technology, which has been formulated through statistical mining of the nature of each Indian language, can also be applied for PCs, web, ATM, Touch screen kiosks, STB, IPTV etc.

With a game-like interaction, the first time user will find that one needs just few minutes to get acquainted with the software. The usability is such that it can be used by users of all age groups and social profiles.As of now the software can be installed on a Nokia Java phone. Other phones will be supported soon.

The praiseworthy technology, which aims to bridge the gap between the western technology and its potential users, has already been developed for many global languages including Arabic, Russian and Hebrew. Work on languages like Chinese, Japanese and Korean is underway.

Govt concerned at falling landline revenues

This is one of the least intuitive, buggy, and ugly mobile app I've ever seen. The default language is Hindi and it takes time to figure out how to get other languages. FAIL.
