New Delhi, Feb 18: As food prices rage on a northbound journey, food inflation inched up to 17.97 per cent for the week ended Feb 6.

The food inflation numbers rose on the hike in potato and onion prices. Potato prices saw a 57.67 per cent rise from 2008 level, while onions got 29.92 per cent more costlier.

As the rates of moong and poultry chicken soared, the price index for food articles, on weekly basis, went up 0.1 per cent.

The figures shot past the Reserve Bank of India's forecast of 8.5 per cent.

Speaking on the surge in Inflation, Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday, Feb 18 said, "That is (rising inflation) a matter of concern, no doubt...I am afraid...8.5 per cent wholesale price index rise is disturbing...(but) I do hope that over a period of few months, it will be possible to have the moderate rate of inflation."

The Indian Food Price Index: 17.97% on Y/Y basis Potato prices increased 57.67% from the 2008 price levels. Onion prices increased 29.92% from the 2008 price levels. Milk prices have gone up by Rs. 2/- per Liter over January 2010 prices. Toor Dal, Pulses etc have also shot up in the last one year – almost touching Rs. 100/- per Kg. Sugar prices have touched Rs. 50/- per Kg. The Government is still allowing export of Sugar to the European Union at a very low rate while importing it at higher rates. Under these circumstances, how can the government think of increasing the fuel prices – 6.0% on Petrol and 7.75% on Diesel and an additional Excise Duty of Re.1/- on both Petrol & Diesel? Will this increase in Fuel Prices not have cascading effect on FOOD PRICES? Whom is the present PM / FM trying to Fool? If the Government wants to take a hard decision, why is it burdening the POOR and giving relief to 60% of Tax payers – to the extent of Rs. 26,000 Crores. Why relief to TOY BALLOON manufacturers? Who is it going to benefit? (Last year PC gave relief to DOGGY FOOD because he loves pets I don’t know whom else he will give tax relief to, in the future. Fortunately he is no more an FM) Let us be clear, The Congress Party wants to recover all the money it spent in bribing the poor electorate and “OTHER EXPENSES”, to win this election of 2009. Lakhs of Crores must have been spent and they are in a hurry to recover it before they loose Power at the Center. This is Congress Arrogance at its height.
