Fonseka files petition against Rajapaksa's victory
Colombo, Feb 16: Citing electoral malpractices, Sri Lanka's defeated presidential candidate former army chief Sarath Fonseka has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Jan 26 election.

The petition by Fonseka sought the Court's determination of the President Rajapaksa re-election as void.

Fonseka, in a petition filed through his lawyers, challenged the presidential results, alleging that the votes have been rigged by Rajapaksa, Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake and 20 others.

The former army chief, who is currently serving detention was accompanied by JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, Sunil Handunnetti, Ravi Karunanayaka and John Ameratunge.

Besides, accusing that the electoral result was tainted by rigging, electoral malpractice and undue influence of the government on the electorate, Fonseka in his petition said that the state media was also misused.
