Toyota may initiate Prius recall in Japan on Feb 9

Toyota may start Prius recall in Japan
Tokyo, Feb 8: Toyota Motor Corp is reportedly on the verge of announcing the recall of its new Prius hybrid car globally, starting with Japan on Tuesday, Feb 9.

Quoting a source familiar with the development, a news agency reported that Toyota is readying itself for a recall of Prius in Japan, followed by similar steps in the United States, Europe and other markets.

The report which comes amid various speculative reports on the recall of the hybrid, says that the announcement to recall the Prius globally will come from a filing with Japan's Transport Ministry on Tuesday, Feb 9.

Prius recall comes on the back of reports of faulty brakes in the hybrid car. The company is reportedly working on repairing the software glitch that delays braking on the model in certain road conditions.

With this recall, the image of the auto giant is expected to hit a new low as it has already recalled over 8 million cars recently due to acceleration problems.

Amid scathing accusations from US safety authorities and members of the Obama administration that the company did not respond quickly enough, Toyota President Akio Toyoda on Friday, Feb 5 apologised for the series of recalls.

Globally over 300,000 units of Prius have been sold. The car was Japan's top-selling car in 2009.

It is also a very important model for Toyota as it earned a reputation as the green-vehicle front-runner prompting the rivals across the world to start working on their very own low-emission vehicles.
