Look poor to avoid attacks: Oz police to Indians
Melbourne, Feb 7: A top Victorian police official has advised Indian students in Australia to keep a low profile and "try to look as poor as you can" to avoid attacks.

The Victorian police chief commissioner Simon Overland said said students could take some steps to protect themselves.

Overland said, "Don't display your iPods, don't display your valuable watch, don't display your valuable jewellery. Try to look as poor as you can."

"If you can live somewhere safer, live somewhere safer. If you can avoid public transport into high-risk areas late at night, avoid it," Overland was quoted by The Age as saying.

But, the Federation of Indian Student Association (FISA) rejected Overland's remarks.

FISA spokesperson Gautam Gupta termed the police chief's advice as 'ridiculous'.

What the hell!!!Comical Statement. Why should anyone dress poorly for the fear of being attacked. I like to enjoy what i have earned and live as i want.

What about the statement is ridiculous? It's common sense advice about reducing the risk of attack in the city. Perhaps some of these people were attacked precisely because they also thought these seemingly obvious tips were 'ridiculous'.
