New Delhi, Feb 1: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has requested the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to refrain from serving beef during the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
In a letter to the Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi PETA urged the committee to respect the country's culture and beliefs by not serving non-vegetarian food items to the athletes and delegates during Oct 2010 event.
"Refraining from serving beef would be respectful to the millions of people who revere cows...serving only vegan food would show respect for people of all faiths and would demonstrate respect for all animals and public health," the animal rights group said.
Quoting a United Nations study that the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, trains and planes in the world combined, PETA added, "The production of meat, eggs and dairy products also wreaks havoc on the environment, being an important cause of carbon emissions."
The CWG committee has already received a similar request from BJP president Rajnath Singh. Earlier Singh wrote to Kalmadi informing him of BJP's objection to serving beef at the event.
