'Home guards being trained as 1st line of defense'
Bangalore, Jan 30: Recalling the devastating Oct 2009 floods at the 'National Disaster Reduction Day' rally on Friday, Jan 29, Governor of Karnataka, Hans Raj Bhardwaj appreciated the Home Guards and Civil Defense for the dedicated rescue efforts.

The governor was the chief guest at the 'National Disaster Reduction Day' rally and function arranged by the Home Guards, Civil Defense and Fire and Emergency Services at Field Marshall Manikshaw Parade ground.

Besides appreciating the efforts of Home Guards and Civil Defense in assisting Police and Fire and Emergency Services, the governor specifically spoke about the role played by the volunteers of Home Guards and Civil Defense in rescuing the people and mitigating the damages during recent floods in 12 Districts of the State.

Jija Madhavan Harisingh, DGP of Home Guards, Civil Defense and Fire and Emergency Services also addressed the gathering.

She projected the procurement of advance rescue vans and equipment working on Mist technology to fight the fire by the Fire Services and exposure of the volunteers of Home Guards and Civil Defense in the usage of these equipments.

After explaining the role played by the three departments, Dr Jija informed that 6000 volunteers have enrolled in Civil Defense (Suraksha Mithra) so far and are being trained to be the first line of defense.

Rally enjoyed a huge participation of 650 volunteers from Home Guards, Civil Defense, Fire and Emergency Services, CAR, KSRP, NCC and Scouts. Over two thousand school students also attended the function.

LS urges govt to find a lasting solution to floods

New Delhi, Aug 24: Members of the Lok Sabha today urged the Government to initiate measures for finding a lasting solution to prevent devastation caused by annual floods.
