Mumbai drunk driving: Policeman dies, toll up to 2

Mumbai drunk lady driver on drugs?
Mumbai, Jan 30: The death toll in the Mumbai drunk driving accident has risen to two as a policeman, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital, succumbed to his wounds.

The latest victim, identified as sub-inspector Dinanath Shinde, died on Saturday, Jan 30 after a motorcyclist was crushed to death in the mishap.

At around 1 am in the morning, 27-year-old woman driver rammed her Honda CRV into a traffic police Qualis, a motorcycle and a taxi.

35-year-old motorcyclist, Afzal Mukhmojiya who was rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident was declared dead.

Five policemen were injured in the mishap. With one of them succumbing to the injuries, four are left fight for their lives in hospitals.

A medical test on the woman driver, Nuriya Yusuf Ahluwalia, confirmed that the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol. She has been arrested.

"The police found three beer cans in her vehicle and when she was checked for alcohol consumption with a breathalyser, her alcohol count was 457 mg. The permissible limit is 30 mg," DCP (Traffic) Nandkumar Chougule said.

As per media reports, the police is now trying to ascertain if the woman was also under the influence of drugs.

Lima, Feb 23: A remote stretch of highway in northeast Peru turned into a dramatic rescue scene as police and fire fighters tried to pull out injured people trapped in the wreckage of two buses, which collided killing as many as 38 people on Monday, Feb 22.The police said that 58 people have been injured in the accident which took place when two buses collided head on.The casualty numbers were those confirmed as of Feb 22 afternoon......

This case should set a precidence - driving under the influence is ILLEGAL & the fact that innocent bystanders were killed - yes, the maximum sentence allowable....this may act as a deterrent to others

Our country especially the cities need to have stricter check on incidences of drunk driving. The practice of late night drunk driving is too common in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Let us try to stop the menace rather than relenting the unfortunate happenings so frequently.
