Nine-year-old Brit Indian girl, brother get GCSE A* in maths

London, Jan 22(ANI): A nine year-old Indian origin girl and her eight-year-old brother have both gained A* grades in GCSE maths.

Meera Songara and her brother Raam, who began studying independently after their father Dipak gave them maths textbooks when they were just five and four, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are keen to continue.

"We didn't know that the results were coming out so it was a surprise when Dad gave us the envelope. I couldn't believe it when we opened it up and we had both got A*s. It was an amazing feeling," The Telegraph quoted Meera, as saying.

Raam said: "I love doing maths, it's really fun. It was exciting to do the exam and get the results, I just want to keep on doing it."

He said that he wants to become a mathematician one day, but Meera's favourite subject is English and she is keeping her options open for the future.

Meanwhile, their father has said that he always had confidence in his children, and was astonished when they ploughed through the key stage books and kept getting them more to feed their appetite for numbers.

Dipak recalled that he gave the children a foundation paper to try when they reached GCSE maths level books last year, and was amazed when they scored over 90 per cent.

He then asked the children if they would like to take a GCSE exam and arranged with Luton Sixth Form College in Bedfordshire for them to sit the two exams as external candidates.

After sitting the tests in November, they received the results last week, both gaining top A* grades by scoring over 90 per cent, without having any private tuition.

Following the result, the pair could skip ahead at school, but their parents wanted them to remain with their peer group.

"We were over the moon when we got the results. The whole family was screaming and shouting. I just want them to enjoy their childhood. There's no rush for them to take their A Levels," Dipak said. (ANI)
