London, Jan 22 (ANI): A survey has found that British teenage schoolchildren think that oats grow on trees and that bacon comes from sheep.

According to the researchers, many children and young adults under the age of 30 believed that eggs are the key ingredients in bread.

The survey found that 26 percent of children thought bacon came from sheep, 29 percent thought oats grew on trees, while 17 percent of both children and adults believed eggs are the main ingredients in bread.

"The results show how important it is to teach the adults of tomorrow about the food they eat," the Telegraph quoted Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union, as saying.

"Everyone should know where primary foods like cereals are grown and the role they play as part of a healthy balanced diet.

"It is critical that children and adults alike understand more about their food, and the role British Farmers play in producing it," he added.

The survey, conducted on behalf of Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) in the build up to Farmhouse Breakfast Week awareness campaign, concluded older generations knew "much more" about food.

The survey, conducted online by OnePoll and YoungPoll, got almost 3,000 replies. (ANI)
