Bangalore, Jan 20: Karnataka chief minister on Wednesday, Jan 20 decided against allowing Bt Brinjal in Karnataka and the activists had a lot to do behind the decision.
Putting forward their views, they suceeded in putting across their concern about the GM foods which not only raises question on its safety front but also violates the rights of farmers
Speaking against the usage of GM foods, members of Horticulture Department shared data which showed possible pest management in brinjal through eco friendly measures.
Questioning the need for Bt Brinjal, Former Vice Chancellor and noted agriculture scientist, Dr G K Veeresh said that it is not clear as to why it has to be developed, when no one had actually asked for it.
Noted journalist, Nagesh Hegde urged that GM foods should be disallowed in India as it have banned in several developed countries in Europe.
Sharing his concern about its safe usage, Muniyappa, principal secretary, agriculture, suggested further scientist research about its side affects on pregnant women.
He said that it is advisable to go slow as the products have not been introduced anywhere in the world.
Meanwhile, Western Ghats Task Force Chairman Ananth Hegde Ashisar spoke against the usage of the Bt Brinjal on the grounds that biodiversity has to be preserved.
Karnataka says no to Bt Brinjal
Kodihalli Chandrasekhar, Working President Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and noted molecular scientist who was also present in the gathering said that Karnataka should follow the footstep of Kerala in banning GM foods and declare itself a GN free state.
The state government will communicate its decision in the consultation to be held by Mr Jairam Ramesh on January 25th 2010 in Bangalore.
