UK: Indian dies rescuing woman, hailed as hero

London, Jan 12: 31-year-old Indian-origin Sikh, Sukhwinder Singh has been elated to the status of a hero in London.

Singh died while trying to rescue a 28-year-old woman, who was being mugged, near Barking station in east London.

Singh, who saw that the woman was under attack, rushed to her rescue. When Singh caught up with the muggers after a pursuit a fight broke out, in which he was wounded.

The father of one succumbed to his wounds in Royal London hospital.

The police, who acknowledge that Singh lost his life bravely trying to prevent crime, call him a hero, while the local newspapers carried his photo in the front paper recognising his bravery.

The woman was later identified as Karamjit Kaur, an Indian student. The attack took place on Friday, Jan 8 at around 6:45 pm when she was returning home.

The man who saw the attackers come from behind and steal her bag, rushed to the woman's rescue despite not knowing her.

Following this tragic incident, the police advised people not to intervene and bear their own safety in mind during such criminal incidents.
