Uttar Pradesh: Eight policemen sentenced to life
Lucknow, Jan 6: Eight policemen has been sentenced to life in Uttar Pradesh for killing two innocent youth from Jharkhand, an official said on Wednesday, Jan 6.

Prosecution lawyer Vikas Shakya said that the verdict was announced by additional sessions Judge AK Dwivedi on Tuesday, Jan 5 after the accused surrendered before the court.

"Now of the total 16 policemen who were booked for killing the two youths in September 2003, 13 have been sentenced to life imprisonment. While two policemen never turned up for trial and are still absconding, another did not surrender before the court Tuesday. All these three are sub-inspectors," Shakya said in Sonbhadra.

Earlier five other policemen were given similar sentences for killing Prabhat Kumar Srivastava and Rama Shankar Sahu, native of Jharkhand in a false encounter.

"Srivastava and Sahu were travelling on a train to meet some of their relatives. Both had alighted at Sonbhadra railway station, where policemen from the Pipri police station picked them up, branded them criminals and later killed them," said Shakya.

The case was transferred to CBI as magisterial inquiry found discrepancies into the shooting, following which a case was registered against four sub-inspectors and 12 constables in 2006
