US postal stamps in honour of comic heroes

Comic heroes on US postal stamps
Washington, Jan 5: The United States Postal Services (USPS) has announced a line of stamps called 'Sunday Funnies' which will include popular comic book characters like Archie Beetle Bailey, Garfield, Dennis the Menace and Calvin and Hobbes.

Sunday Funnies, which are expected to go on sale in Jul 2010, has raised cheers among the comic book lovers.

The comic characters include all the popular comic stripes that are printed in newspapers across the world.

While the story of teenage Archie Andrews and his friends at Riverdale paint a picture of American adolescence, Beetle has been idolised as the military strip with universal appeal.

Created in 1978, the lazy cat Garfield appeals to children as well as adults.

The 6-year-old Calvin and his imaginary pet tiger Hobbes tells the stories of the two inseparable characters and their adventures together as they question the ways of the world.

Earlier, USPS announced stamps in the honour of Mother Teresa, actress Katharine Hepburn, Negro Baseball Leagues, silver screen cowboys Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tom Mix and William S Hart, singer Kate Smith, the monarch butterfly and more.
