Mobile number portability across India by Mar 2010

New Delhi, Dec 31: The mobile number portability (MNP) will be introduced across India by Mar 31, 2010, the government said in a statement on Thursday, Dec 31.

"The government has now decided to implement it in whole of the country in one go, by 31st Mar 2010," the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said in the statement.

The MNP allows users to retain their number even if they switch operators.

It was to be introduced in metro cities and Category A telecom zones from Dec 31, and in other areas by Mar 20, 2010.

BSNL to slash call rates from Mar 1

New Delhi, Feb 26: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to slash the call rates from March 1. BSNL is planning to slash local call rate to Rs 0.33 paise per minute and STD rates to 50 paise per minute in its revised landline/WLL tariff. BSNL is also planning to launch a pre-paid mobile service called 'India Golden 50' which will bring in STD rates to 50 paise a minute. Govt will announce the successful bidders for grant.....

Mobile number portability will take more time

New Delhi, Jul 24: Looks like the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service will be delayed by three months. The service which was expected to be available by Sep 2009, will only be available in the year end."Mobile number portability will come by the end of this year," said telecom secretary Siddartha Behura on the sidelines of a conference.He said that the delay in implementation was because its a novel services and regulations on this need to be prepared......

New Delhi, Sep 4: The government on Thursday, Sep 4, extended the implementation deadline of mobile number portability (MPN) from Sep 20 to Dec 31, 2009.The MNP facility will allow users to retain their numbers even after changing service providers.The 100-day delay in the scheduled execution of the MNP is attributed to operators' inability to upgrade their network as well as to the delay on part of regulator Trai to come out with tariff for the service......

Is MNP (mobile number portability) available in the same region or across the different telecom regions? for example, a person with the Delhi phone number moves to Karnataka and can he still retain his Delhi number while in Karnataka?
