Help on the way for poor Malay Indians

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 31 (ANI): Selangor Malaysian Indian Congress Youth wing has established an understanding with the Selangor Welfare Department to register poor Indians in the state to help them get the assistance they desperately need.

Selangor MIC Youth chief Shanker Raj Ayanger said the cooperation with the department would start next month.

He added that representatives from the Welfare Department would participate in programmes organised by the MIC Youth at all 22 MIC divisions in the state to register the poor, especially the Indians.

The NST Online quoted Shanker as saying that the department's director, Adnan Abu Bakar, had consented for his officers to take part in the programme so that the department would have first-hand information on those who registered.

Shanker said Adnan admitted that the department was short-handed and could not go to the grassroots to register the poor and, therefore, welcomed MIC Youth's offer to help.

"Adnan asked us to get the names of those who needed the department's assistance. We also identified the various forms of assistance available for the poor at the meeting," he said after a meeting with Adnan here on Wednesday.

Shankar added that during an MIC Cares programme organised in Kota Raja recently, the state Youth wing managed to register some 800 individuals, mostly Indians, and the names had been submitted to the Welfare Department for further action.

Shanker said that apart from the Welfare Department, MIC Youth had also arranged meetings with the Human Resources Ministry and other departments, which had incentives, programmes and skills training to help the Indian community in Selangor. (ANI)
