Bangalore, Dec 24: Looks like the Indian companies too will have to introduce a 10-minute 'Facebook break' being practised in Britain, as a new study has found that Indian employees are wasting as much as one hour on the social networking sites at work.
A survey by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) conducted on employees in several Indian cities found that 77 pc of over 4,000 employees with Orkut accounts accessed them at work, while 50 pc of the workers checked their Facebook accounts.
The survey also discovered that 40 pc of workers built their profiles on the sites during office hours.
In a more interesting finding, a whooping 83 pc of workers opined that it was perfectly acceptable to browse the internet while at work.
This 'dangerous' trend is affecting the productivity of Indian firms drastically, the survey found.
"As a matter of fact, [the] growing use of browsing sites can be dangerous for overall productivity and IT companies have already installed software to restrict its use," Assocham secretary general DS Rawat said.
